SCRAM
SCRAM is a 24/7 *trans-dermal alcohol-testing device that is typically court ordered for use with high-risk *DWI, offenders and/or repeat offenders. In addition, SCRAM may also be used as a stand-alone house arrest bracelet as an alternative sentence to incarceration.
The SCRAM system works well in conjunction with treatment to enforce sobriety and identify when intervention may be needed for repeat DWI clients.
SCRAM Candidates
Individuals who have one or more previous drunk driving offenses that include DWI, *DUI or have a *BAC of 0.15 or more when arrested can be found as eligible candidates for the SCRAM Program. These individuals contribute to 58% of all alcohol-related fatalities and often suffer from alcohol addiction. The behavioral problems associated with high-risk DWI offenders are often treated with SCRAM, which provides a safe and effective way to monitor sobriety.
SCRAM Testing
SCRAM uses skin perspiration to detect alcohol in 30-minute intervals without participation from the client. There are no gaps in the frequency of testing. It measures what is known as *Insensible Perspiration, which is always present on the skin.
The information collected by SCRAM is uploaded to a base station that is then transmitted to the agency monitoring the clients case. This process is done electronically and without the clients participation.
SCRAM Removal
The device is worn around the ankle at all times and is prohibited from being removed unless authorized by the court, a primary physician, or probation officer. A reasonable request to have the device removed might include an *MRI scan. Typically, however, the ankle device is never removed—even while showering.
Tampering with, or obstructing the bracelets ability to function properly is strictly prohibited. When the bracelet takes a reading every 30-minutes, it is also checking for signs of tampering.
